(International)Pakistan President to Attend Nato Talks on Afghanistan

The country broke ties with the organization after an air strike killed Pakistani soldiers in November.

The Pakistani embassy in Washington said last week that Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari would attend the Nato summit on Afghanistan, which was due to be held on May 19 and 20. Nato has said that Pakistans role in the future of Afghanistan will be crucial, suggesting that it would welcome Zardaris involvement in the Chicago talks.

Pakistans dealing with Nato were complicated after an air strike killed 24 soldiers in the country last November. Pakistan demanded an apology and an end to drone strikes, and it then blocked Nato trucks from going into Afghanistan. The US expressed regret for the soldiers deaths, but has continued with air strikes. Although unhappy about this, its thought that Pakistani leaders feel they need to work with Nato in order to have a role in Afghanistans future.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar has spoken about the countrys future relations with Nato. Pakistans strategic objectives in the region and the stated objectives of the West... that of peace and stability for Afghanistan... are exactly the same," she said, adding: So we want to continue to be a facilitator and an enabler and not a blocker. And this is what Pakistan has tried to achieve.
