(國際)聯合國安理會譴責敘利亞襲擊

(International)UN Security Council Condemns Syrian Attack

At least 108 people were killed during an attack on the town of Houla last week.

On Sunday, the members of the UN Security Council were unanimous in their condemnation of last Fridays massacre in the town of Houla, Syria. Heavy artillery and tanks were used to attack the town, and at least 108 people, including 49 children and 34 women, were left dead. Many countries argued that the attack must have been carried out by Syrian government troops. The Syrian government denies the charge, arguing that armed militants were responsible.

The violence is yet one more indication that a ceasefire brokered by former UN Secretary General Kofi Anan isnt working. The UN Security Council statement on the issue read: Such outrageous use of force against civilian population constitutes a violation of applicable international law and of the commitments of the Syrian Government under United Nations Security Council Resolutions.

In a letter to the Security Council, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appeared to suggest that government troops were responsible for the attack. He wrote that many of the victims had died from artillery or tank shells, weapons that the rebels do not possess. Sanctions against the Middle Eastern nation are still unlikely, though, as Syrian ally Russia is arguing that the evidence is inconclusive.
